Mould Biotoxin Illness (CIRS)
Chronic Inflammatory Response Syndrome
Mould Biotoxin Illness is a multi-symptom, multi-system, inflammatory syndrome most commonly due to exposure to mould biotoxins (mycotoxins) from water-damaged buildings.
It’s common to experience a range of symptoms with CIRS. If you are experiencing symptoms from 6 or more of the below symptom clusters, CIRS investigations are warranted.
Fatigue
Weakness, Decreased Assimilation of New Knowledge, Aches, Headaches, Light Sensitivity
Memory Impairment, Decreased Word-finding
Difficulty Concentrating
Joint Pain, Morning Stiffness, Cramps
Tingling, Tremors, Unusual Pain, Unusual Skin Sensitivity
Shortness of Breath, Sinus Congestion
Cough, Excessive Thirst, Cofusion
Appetite Swings, Difficulty Regulating Temperature, Urinary Frequency
Red Eyes, Blurred Vision, Sweats, Mood Swings, Ice-pick Pains
Abdominal Pain, Diarrhoea, Numbness
Tearing of Eyes, Disorientation, Metallic Taste
Static Shocks, Vertigo
Adrian provides assessment for CIRS based on both the Shoemaker Protocol and appropriate functional pathology. These may include:
Biotoxin Questionnaire
Visual Contrast Screening (VCS)
HLA DQ-DR Genotype for Genetic Susceptibility
MARCoNS (Multi-Antibiotic Resistant Coagulase Negative Staphylocci Infection)
Biotoxin Panel: C3a, C4a, MMP-9, MSH, PAI-1, TGF beta-1, VEG-F, VIP, Leptin, ADH, Osmolality
Androgen Studies
Aspergillus serology
ERMI, HRTSMI-2
Urinary Myoctoxin Panels
SIBO and Microbiome Testing
Adrian will advise on the most appropriate CIRS testing based on your presenting symptoms and health history. A treatment plan will then be developed to remove the exposure, clear biotoxins from the body and restore general health. For complex presentations, Adrian will commonly collaborate with Integrative GPs where pharmaceutical prescribing is warranted and refer to other allied health practitioners when needed to ensure best outcomes are achieved..
Adrian first learned about Chronic Inflammatory Response Syndrome (CIRS) or Mould Biotoxin Illness ten years ago while working at an integrative medical clinic. The main integrative GP, the first in Australia to complete CIRS training with Dr. Ritchie Shoemaker M.D. in the U.S., played a key role in Adrian's understanding. This experience led to a thorough review of complex illness cases at the clinic, often identifying mould exposure as a key underlying driver of illness and helping Adrian develop practical nutrition, herbal, and lifestyle medicine strategies in line with the Shoemaker Protocol.
Continuing his education, Adrian completed Level 2 Practitioner Training at Sandeep Gupta’s Lotus Institute of Holistic Health. He also completed the Mould Illness Made Simple and EMF Made Simple courses. He regularly attends the Australian Chronic Infectious and Inflammatory Disease Society (ACIIDS) conferences and liaises with other CIRS practitioners to keep up to date with the latest approaches for managing this complex illness. To better handle mould-related challenges, Adrian has also completed the Mould Testing Technician course at the Australian College of Environmental Sciences. This training equips Adrian to guide patients through the complexities of identifying and remediating mould-affected or water-damaged buildings in conjunction with addressing health concerns..
